Romney Spends $500 at Chick-fil-A; Obama Entertains Culinary Kids

The latest food-related news from the campaign trail

After sifting through Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s monthly federal campaign finance filing, which was released yesterday afternoon, Politico discovered that his camp spent $500 at a Chick-fil-A in Atlanta last month.

Romney’s campaign reported the fast-food feast, which took place a few days before "National Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," as a "meeting expense." Despite the recent controversy surrounding the chicken chain due to remarks made by the company’s president Dan Cathy condemning gay marriage, Romney has steered clear of commenting on the debate.

In Washington, D.C., first lady Michelle Obama hosted a luncheon at The White House yesterday celebrating the first Kids State Dinner. Fifty-four children were invited to attend the special meal for winning the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, sponsored by Epicurious and Obama’s Let’s Move campaign.

The blooming culinary enthusiasts joined Mrs. Obama and White House chef Sam Kass while they dined on quinoa black bean salad and baked zucchini fries, then enjoyed a performance by Big Time Rush and a tour of the Kitchen Garden. President Obama even made a surprise appearance, where he noted, "I heard that there was a state dinner going on here and usually I get invited to the state dinners. So this time I just had to crash," according to the New York Daily News.

Later that day, the Obamas dined with the winners of the fifth "Dinner with Barack" sweepstakes at the Mintwood Place in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of D.C.
